On October 22, 2021 at home in Burlington, Ontario, Captain Laurie A. Hatfield passed away peacefully at the age of 75, having lived a rich and fulfilling life.
After completing the Marine Officer Cadet program at George Brown College, Laurie began a long and storied career at Shell Canadian Tankers, Soconav Inc. Upper Lakes Corp. and worked up in ranks to become a Master Mariner and Assist. Marine Superintendant. Laurie was a sailor through and through having sailed world-wide, but always proudest of navigating the Great Lakes and the Canadian Arctic.
Laurie’s commitment to Marine Safety and on-going interest in sharing his knowledge led him to become a Winter Marine Professor and Tanker Safety Instructor at Georgian College.
Laurie wouldn’t let retirement slow him down as he served as Secretary of the Great Lakes Division of The Company of Master Mariners of Canada for a number of years.
A loving son to Alex and Grace, a kind brother to Neil and his wife Joanne, a wonderful uncle to Colin, Kelly and Dana, a great-uncle to Ada, Grace, Hannah, Abigail, William and Maelys and a friend to so many, Captain Laurie A. Hatfield will always be remembered for his kind heart, generosity and his everlasting love for his dogs.
Should you wish to honour Captain Hatfield, the family encourages donations be made in memory of his life to World Vision.
A memorial will be scheduled in the Spring of 2022
