Adrian Francis Steeves

Adrian Francis Steeves, passed away peacefully on the evening of January 11, 2024 at the age of 85. He was the youngest of three brothers, born April 5, 1938 in St. John, New Brunswick to parents Viola and Stanley Steeves. However, most of where Adrian grew up would be with the family's move to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, and later to Toronto, Ontario with his Mother after the early passing of his Father.

 

During his mid twenties, now married with a young family, Adrian found work as a photo developer at a mapping company and later quickly moved up the ranks to becoming a successful Photogrammetrist. The family would finally settle in Ottawa, Ontario in 1972, where they would remain. However, Adrian's true love was that of a musician, influenced by his Mother at a young age and the ever present sounds of her piano playing in the house. As a teenager, he developed a passion for jazz and started as a trombonist where he not only played, but also transposed sheet music for the entire orchestra. Also taking to piano and finally the bass, his sideline as a musician and composer remained throughout the rest of his life, gaining the respect and admiration from a multitude of fellow musicians along the way.

 

He will always be remembered as a true talented artist, a kind and gentle soul, armed with a dry wit and unconditional love for his family in his heart. An honest and humble man, he always showed strength, courage and resilience throughout his life right up to his final hours.

 

He is survived by his loving wife of over 60 years, Renate, his two daughters Terry and Wendy, as well as his grandchildren Jordan, Chloe and Aidan. Adrian will be cremated and kept by his loving family, who plan to plant a tree in his honour. We would also like to extend our deepest thanks to Adrian's Cancer and Respirology teams at the Ottawa Hospital, for their above and beyond care and warmth during his final months, as well as his friend and fellow bandmate, Mr. David Heatley, for his extreme kindness and support when it was needed.
