Alex MacDonald

July 6, 1928 — July 16, 2017

Alex died peacefully on Sunday morning July 16th, 2017 in the Palliative ward of Northumberland Hills Hospital, Cobourg, Ontario. Alex was born in Hull, England July 6 1928. He was one of four siblings. He is survived by his sister Betty Grayson. His brother Archie and sisters Dorthy and Rita predeceased him. He is survived by his son David MacDonald and daughter in-law Renee MacDonald, his stepdaughter Camilla Blakeley and husband Gary, stepsons Charles Gurdon and wife Robbie, Hugo Gurdon and wife Meghan and Al Gurdon and wife Sarah and many step grandchildren and friends.
Alex had a lifelong love of carpentry, writing, sailing and was an avid gardener.
Alex emigrated to Canada from London, England on a exchange program with Canada Packers. He had an iconic Canadian adventure as a British Ex Pat. He ran a fish camp on Galiano Island, B.C. with his first wife Cecilia Goldberg, worked as a stage hand for the CBC in the 50's, was a travel editor for the Ontario Motor League in the 60s, did Public Relations and editorial work with The Royal Ontario Museum in the 70s followed by senior managerial work at the Art Gallery of Ontario in the 70s and early 80s. Alex and his second wife Anne Malcolmson retired to a hobby farm in Colborne and lived a rural life of self sufficiency. Alex pursued carpentry and wood turning and with his wife Anne grew fruits and vegetables. Later they lived on Augusta Street in Port Hope.
Alex was always a supporter of Primrose Donkey Sanctuary in Roseneath (http://www.primrosedonkeysanctuary.com/) and donations to Primrose would be welcomed.
