Alexander Gelvan

December 19, 1960 — April 2, 2025

Alexander Gelvan, known to his family and friends as Sasha, died peacefully on April 2, 2025, in his Ottawa home. Sasha was 64 years old. He leaves behind a family who loves him – his sister, Zoya Leybin, and a brother, Vladimir Gelvan, four nieces, Ivietta Matison, Emma Cribb, Simona Snyder, and Ginta Gelvan, and his first cousin, Jana Ratz.

He enjoyed his retirement after a long and very successful career working in the Canadian government. He received many accolades and awards for his years of service and valuable contributions to his country.

Sasha spent his days being active. He liked to swim, read, cook, travel, ski, bike ride, camp, hike and spend quality time with the people he cared about. He loved good food and deep conversations. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a quick wit. He was wise and discerning and always gave great advice when asked. Sasha was beloved by his friends and colleagues. He was a calm, kind and loyal man whom his friends and family could always count on.

Sasha’s family and friends will join together to celebrate his life and mourn his death after he is laid to rest at the King Solomon Memorial Park in Clifton, New Jersey. He will be at peace next to his deceased mother and father, Elsa and Ilya Gelvan, as well as his grandmother, Chaya Gelvan, and his cousin and best friend, Steve Gelvan.
