Anna Mary Huston-Chlan

July 28, 1934 — July 14, 2016

Anna Mary Huston-Chlan
Mary died peacefully in the afternoon on July 14, 2016 at the Eatonville Care Centre in Etobicoke. Care staff attending to another resident in Mary's room commented that Mary had been singing, ‘What a Wonderful World' earlier in the day. Cause of death was determined to be complications due to pneumonia.
Mary was born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario on 28 July 1934 to Joseph and Margaret Connolly. Her fast acting brother, Lawrence called an ambulance for what was determined to be a difficult delivery for mother and child at home.
Joseph and Margaret were the parents of 10 children, 8 who survived birth, Teresa Toohey of Essex, Ontario, Eunice Copps (deceased), Lawrence (deceased), Patrick(deceased), Con (deceased), Joe (deceased) and Jim (deceased) and Mary the youngest.
Mary was predeceased by her first and second husbands, Gordon Huston and Edward Chlan respectively.
Mary is survived by her five children, Maryanne (Dan), Elizabeth, David (Donna), Philip, John and four grandchildren, Alison (Spencer), Victoria, Lauren and Adrienne.
Mary started her working life as a Bell Telephone operator in her teens and quickly rose to manage a team of ‘girls'. She married Gordon Huston at 19 years of age and soon after had her first child, Maryanne, followed by her four siblings. Mary settled in Elliot Lake in the late 1950`s until 2010 when she moved to Etobicoke.
While raising five children on her own, Mary volunteered for the Cancer Society and met Terry Fox during his marathon of hope. She was active in on-camera children's story telling for TV6 community cable. Her strong political views saw her vie for a seat on town council in the early 70`s and volunteer tirelessly in federal politics. She was employed at the Ministry of Transportation Licensing Department and also sold real estate in Elliot Lake. She also won copious trophies for darts, cribbage, shuffleboard and bowling.
After her children grew up she travelled when she could and in 1985 married Edward Chlan. Ed and Mary lived a good life in Elliot Lake and as Florida snowbirds in winter. Although Mary suffered physical complications and pain she still maintained her sense of humor and generosity to family and friends. Mrs. Bertha Laronde, a longtime friend in Elliot Lake, will miss her pal across the street.
Lots of love mom from your friends and family - xoxo
The Huston children also wish to salute the wonderful health care staff at Eatonville for their compassionate care of our mother over the past 6 years. Thank you.
Mary's ashes will be interred at Woodlands Cemetery Aug. 5th, 1:30pm followed by a Celebration of Life at the Fireside Restaurant. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Dying with Dignity Canada would be welcomed. http://www.dyingwithdignity.ca/
