BEAM, Betty Jean April 3, 1929 - December 19, 2018
Passed away peacefully, at the Fort Erie Hospital, Betty Jean Beam, in her 90th year. Predeceased by her husband and partner of 48 years, Carlton Glen Beam; by her parents, William and Hester Hindle who owned a fruit farm and cabins on Portage Road; and her sister Lorna (George) Layman. Survived by her four children, David Beam (Barbara) of Candiac, Quebec, Janet Busby (Keith) of Ottawa, Larry Beam (Thelma) of Etobicoke, Craig Beam, of Waterloo; three grandchildren, Stephanie Sandrin-Beam, Jon and Alysha Busby; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. Fondly remembered by her dear friend and travelling companion Leslie Stoker. A loving and caring mother, Betty graduated from Brock University at age 55 with a degree in Visual Arts. At the time of her retirement she was working at the Niagara Falls Library, having previously worked in office positions at Chef Boy-Ar-Dee, Stamford United Church, and Bright’s Wines. She was always an avid reader, travelled extensively, and enjoyed expressing herself through creative writing and her artwork. Betty was proud to have hosted a one-woman art exhibition, and while a member of the NDAA she won the Hilda Danks award for best watercolour at an Oak’s Hall show. In International Women’s Year she designed a poster for The Local Council of Women that won locally, provincially, federally and received Honourable Mention at the international level in Washington DC. Involved in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Organization, she mentored the same young boy weekly for five years at Cherrywood School. During the past 15 years she got much pleasure from supporting and corresponding with her three World Vision children. A long-time active member of Stamford United Church, Betty felt drawn in recent years to join the Unitarian Congregation of Niagara, in St. Catharines. Cremation has taken place, with private interment to follow.
Spirit of Life Spirit of Life, come unto me. Sing in my heart all the stirrings of compassion, Blow in the wind, rise in the sea; Move in the hand, giving life the shape of justice. Roots hold me close; wings set me free: Spirit of life, come to me, come to me.
