Bonnie Hinton

July 14, 1944 — June 8, 2016

On June 8th 2016, Bonnie Hinton returned to the stardust from whence she came nearly 72 years ago, after a fractious dispute with pancreatic cancer, a dispute whose resolution could only be achieved on Bonnie's grounds. Bonnie was a woman who knew her own mind, and cancer will have figured that out, too.
Bonnie (nee Nichols) was born in St. Thomas, Ontario, to Altha (nee Baker) (Al) and Albert Nichols (Nick). She was blessed and burdened in almost equal measure by three adored sisters: Beverly Crosina, Judy Kerr and Wendy Nichols. Bonnie will be forever held close in heart and memory by her loving daughter, Angela, cherished son, Dan and dutiful son-in-law, Gareth.
A BRAT, she was a most adaptable individual, moving with aplomb from the bargaining table to society functions, pausing only to add a dash more mascara and a cocktail length necklace. Her last career position was as business agent for the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) 2424, representing administrative and technical support staff at Carleton University. Bonnie believed in protecting rights for workers and in holding "management" to account. She also believed in social justice, abhorring unfair advantage in all its forms.
Mom enjoyed puttering in her garden, waging war with weeds and withering petunias. She loved to sit on our patio and chat about politics and current affairs or remember fond and funny times. A good book was her best friend and the anticipation of a good read a source of joyous optimism. She had a quick wit and a whimsical sense of humour. Her belly laugh was contagious.
She was fortunate in her final days to have the love and company of family, friends and neighbours, for which we are grateful. We thank especially Dr. Ngo, Dr. DeVost and the nursing and social work team of the Supportive Care unit at Lakeridge Health, Oshawa. In remembrance of Bonnie, donations to the Supportive Care unit at Lakeridge Health would be greatly appreciated.
A small family ceremony for cremation has taken place. Details for a Memorial Garden Party to follow.
