Carl was born in Melton Mowbray, UK on July 11th, 1970. The family relocated to Chew Magna near Bristol when Carl was 12 years old. He resided there until relocating to Canada in 2007 with his then-wife, Jayme. He passed away on October 1st, 2022 from ALS/MND.
For many, the first thing that springs to mind when Carl’s name is mentioned is travel. An avid traveler, Carl visited several dozen countries across many continents. Hong Kong, South Africa, Iceland, Cambodia, Fiji, Australia, Chile and Jamaica and several countless others. He lived in Japan for a year teaching English as well and loved all things Japanese.
For others, when they think of Carl, they remember his deep love of the good things in life, especially wine. Carl was a qualified sommelier and a collector of good vintages and delicious bottles. These, which he squirrelled away, often disappeared for years until an occasion popped up where he went down to find that perfect bottle for whatever was being served.
Others remember Carl for his gentle demeanor and friendly disposition, fierce loyalty and a certain stoicism which held him in good stead right 'til the end.
Some people remember him as a cheery Canada Post employee friendly to all.
Or maybe as a best friend through the formative years of life and school.
A brother, son, uncle, father, friend, colleague, neighbour, co-parent. He served many roles and always cheerfully in his way.
Carl loved baseball and watched all the Blue Jays games he could. He loved listening to classic rock and Queen was by far his favourite. He used to say that his one regret was not seeing Queen live. He listened to his music right 'til the end, and the staff at the hospice would often sing along as they went on their rounds.
Carl is survived by his daughter, Carys Foley; his mother, Pamela Foley; brother and sister-in-law Andrew (bruv) and Lindsay Foley; nieces Nyah and Evie Foley. He is predeceased by his father, Chris Foley.
Carl’s Celebration of Life will be held at ALE: Amberwood Lodge and Eatery on October the 12th, 2022 from 4p.m. to 6.30 p.m. at 54 Springbrook Drive, Stittsville. (aleottawa.ca) Children are welcome. Refreshments will be served (charcuterie, sandwiches, and desserts).
Carl’s wish was that there is some good music playing and that people wear bright colours.
The family wishes to thank all friends for their support and assistance along the way. ALS is a disease that requires plenty of technology and equipment and the help was so gratefully received and appreciated.
The staff at the Ruddy-Shenkman hospice for their kind understanding and excellent care they provided Carl in his last weeks of life. They patiently took the time that was necessary to ensure that he was comfortable and maintained his dignity right to the end. Nurses, PSWs and Volunteers were often seen joking around with Carl, touching his shoulder or leg and singing along with the music.
Dr. K. Spacek for her compassion and excellent and attentive care.
The ALS Society at the Ottawa Hospital for helping us navigate and anticipate Carl's changing needs.
Everyone who called, visited, brought soup and beer, dropped in, messaged, helped and sent good wishes. They were greatly welcomed and appreciated.
