It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Carmela (Carmen) Fitzgerald on January 3, 2024, at the age of 86, peacefully surrounded by her loving family. Carmen was born to Pietro and Marianna Giannitelli (nee Torriero) and immigrated to Canada from Italy in 1954 to build a life with her family in Toronto and where she met her love, Steve, while working at the Bank of Nova Scotia. They married 6 months later (February 24, 1962) and eventually settled in Ottawa.
Carmen's legacy lives on in her husband, Stephen Fitzgerald, and their four children: Allen (Lise), Leah (Mike), Stephanie (Gianfranco), and Leslie (Joe). She was also immensely proud of her four grandchildren: Shannon (Hussam), Maya (Shaehan), Cameron (Jordan), and Jake.
Carmen is survived by her sister Wanda (Frank predeceased), her nephews Maurice (Vania) and Glen (Esperanza) and her niece Laurie Ann (Henry). She was predeceased by her brother Antonio Giannitelli and survived by her sister-in-law Mary (nee Di Adamo) and their two children Michael (Elizabeth) and Daniel (Namita). She was welcomed into the Fitzgerald clan and leaves behind her brothers-in-law: Myles (predeceased Joan), Lorne (LeeAnne, predeceased Eleanor), Sean (Judy), and her sisters-in-law Geraldine (Tom) and Colleen, along with her many nephews and nieces who held a special place in her heart, and often spoke fondly of them.
We cherish the connections she fostered with her family and friends from her hometown of Italy and held dear in her heart, even from afar.
Carmen’s warm presence and kind-heartedness will be lovingly remembered by everyone whose heart she touched.
May she find eternal peace until we meet again.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at St. Patrick's Home who cared for Carmen and showed deep compassion during her stay.
A Catholic service will be held in the Chapel at Hope Cemetery, Friday, January 12, 2024, at 2 p.m. Location Address: 4660 Bank St, Gloucester.
