Charalambos Georgopoulos

November 3, 1924 — July 17, 2021

Toronto

It is with great sadness and heartache that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather (papou), Charalambos (Harry) Georgopoulos, at the age of 96. Harry will be fondly remembered for the humble, sincere, hardworking and honest man that he was by his entire family, friends and all that knew him. He loved and cherished his wife Chariklia (Roula) of 56 years, his children Tom and George (Laurie) and precious grandchildren Harry and Jesse who were his pride and joy.

Harry was born in the village of Vrissoules, Greece in 1924. He was the first of 5 children born to his parents. In April 1959 at the age of 34 he immigrated to Canada and arrived by boat in Halifax where he then made his way by train to Toronto to meet up with his sister Anastasia (Tasia) who had arrived in Canada in 1957 who married Panagiotis (Peter). He lived with his sister, her husband and their children Vlas and Tom for a number of years as they worked to establish themselves in their new country.

In June of 1965, Chariklia, the woman who became his wife, lifelong companion, and the Mother of their children followed him over by airplane. They were married weeks later in July and shortly thereafter welcomed their first son, Tom in April of 1966. They all lived together as extended Family until later 1967 when Harry and Roula purchased their own first home as they awaited the arrival of their second son George in April of 1968.

He enjoyed working with his colleagues at Environment Canada who christened him “Harry” as they couldn’t pronounce Charalambos. In the early days of bringing up his family he often, at times worked 2 and 3 jobs to provide and get ahead as much as he could. He would often come home late at night after making pizzas and kiss his children good night.

He enjoyed birthday parties and socials with Family and close Family friends as well as enjoyed working his garden where he produced tomatoes, cucumbers, other vegetables and beans a plenty and did so as late as his 92nd year. His neighbours on Cavell were amazed with him continuing to clear his snow even in his later years.

He is pre-deceased by his Father Athansios, his Mother Zaxaroula, his Sister Christina and his Brothers Marinos and George. He is survived by his wife Chariklia, sons Tom and George (Laurie) and his beloved grandchildren Harry and Jesse. His sister Anastasia (Panagiotis) and their children Vlas (Cathy) and Tom (Laura)

We would like to thank the staff of Hellenic Home Scarborough for their care of our Father for their care while he was there and their continued care for our Mother.

You will be forever loved and deeply missed. You were the ultimate provider who quietly assisted all that he could. We will cherish all of our wonderful memories and know you will be near us in spirit. Until we meet again
