Despite the many difficulties, Chau was able to successfully gain refugee and later citizenship status in Canada. In Canada, Chau would give birth to a second child, Quang Doan in 1986, and her third child, Khoi Doan, in 1993. Chau would later divorce her husband but continue to live, with her children, under the same roof as her husband.
As a mother, Chau was a very compassionate and affectionate mother who loved to cook and always ensured her children’s needs were met. Chau often rented and watched Vietnamese soap operas. She enjoyed knitting clothing and creating pottery. Chau worked and supported her family as both a factory worker and a Barber. Chau charged the lowest rates in the local region for her services as a barber which made her very popular and many of her customers continued to call for her services well after her death. Chau was empathetic to a fault and often only saw the good in people and gave many chances to those that did her or her children wrong including her husband.
Chau’s health would decline as she faced continuous stress from the antics of her husband and the difficulty of raising three children by herself. Eventually her health would decline to the point that she was unable to stand for more than a few minutes and required daily assistance which her sons provided. Chau would later pass away in the hospital surrounded by her three children on May 28th, 2019. Chau had requested that any news of her death be delayed so as not to burden others.
