Cyril ‘Cy’ William Fleming
November 5, 1930 - December 2, 2023
Cy passed away peacefully at 93, with his family by his side. He is survived by his daughters, Helena, Denise (Bob Speer), Markita (Gabrielle Pop-Lazic) and Elizabeth (Murray Tait) and grandchildren Mikey and Julia Horikawa, Sophie Speer (Erik Benson), Liam Speer and Daxton Tait. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Carmel (2019) and his sons, Jimmy (2011) and Paul (2021).
Cy was part of a large family, born on Allan’s Island, NFLD to Vincent and Mary Fleming. His upbringing during the depression profoundly impacted his character and motivations. In Labrador City, with 6 young children to feed, he operated Nascopie Travel, as well as several other businesses, each having a dedicated rotary phone. He was also instrumental in bringing what is now known as Mary Brown’s Chicken to Eastern Canada. Cy and Carmel moved to Mississauga in 1972 where they operated Sheridan Travel Agency until their retirement. His entrepreneurial spirit never waned, as he formulated new business ideas into his 90s.
Despite financial success, Cy never forgot people who were struggling. He was a practicing Catholic who expressed his faith by helping others with his resources and time. People in Alcoholics Anonymous helped him quit drinking at 80, and he gave back to others in the same way. He was a lifelong supporter of the pro–life movement and not afraid to be politically incorrect. Cy wrote a lot of letters, CCed to many politicians.
Many will remember Cy because of his beautiful garden. He was outside all the time and was known for his giant hibiscus flowers. Many of these plants now grace his neighbourhood. He kept his mind and body in motion and lived a good, long life because of it.
Our Dad said that he didn’t understand why people were so sad when someone died. He said we should be happy and celebrate because they have run their race and made it to the finish line.
In this spirit, we welcome you to celebrate Cy’s life at a Catholic funeral mass at 1:30pm on Thursday, December 14th at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 2473 Thorn Lodge Drive, Mississauga. A reception to follow in the church basement. No flowers please. Donations appreciated to Poverello Charities who provide community housing for people with mental illness.
