Dale Martin Howe Caragata

DALE MARTIN HOWE CARAGATA
(1942 - 2020)

Sacred to the memory of Dale Martin Howe Caragata who was born on December 11, 1942 in Wood Mountain, Saskatchewan and passed away peacefully in his home in Toronto, Ontario on January 16, 2020.

Dale was predeceased by his beloved father, Theodore Marin Caragata (1914 - 1985) and by his adored mother, Anna Mary Howe Caragata (1916 - 2005). Dale is survived by his loving sister, Lynn-Marie Mackay (Toronto) and his beloved nephews, Alex Mackay (Toronto) and Taylour Mackay (Vancouver) and his nephew’s father, Keiller Mackay (Toronto).

Dale also leaves behind his Aunt Barb Howe (Glentworth, Sask.), Aunt Barbara Howe (Lethbridge, Alberta), Aunt Dell Howe (Regina) and Uncle Jim Howe (Assiniboia, Sask.) as well as a multitude of adored cousins - Bette & Trayton Adair (Toronto), Lorrie Howe & Alex Chepovetsky (Toronto), Debra Adair (Toronto), Doug and Catherine Adair (Tottenham) to name only a few. Dale leaves behind many cherished friends including James Pogue, Dmitry Chepovetsky, Jerome Godboo and Danny Marks.

Dale studied modern languages at the University of Toronto (1961 - 1965) but his true passion and strength was genealogy. After years of meticulous research he published The Longs of Longfield (1998). He also compiled a History of the Caragata Family. Dale was very proud of his heritage: his American, English, Irish, Norwegian and Romanian roots. Dale traced his maternal descent to the Van Tassels of Sleepy Hollow, New York from Chief Wyandance of the Montauk Indians of Long Island, New York and from the Longs of Longfield House, Cashel, Tipperary, Ireland and from the Moores of Barn Park, Clonmel, Tipperary, Ireland (through which he was descended from the Royal Houses of Plantagenet & Tudor — from Kings Edward III & Henry VII).

Music was big in Dale’s life and he loved Blues and Rock 'n Roll. He enjoyed attending gigs hosted by musician friends, local Toronto celebrants, Jerome Godboo and Danny Marks. Dale loved living in the Cabbagetown community in his co-op apartment where he resided for many years. Dale loved Facebook and he often posted YouTube music videos and playlists to his 5,000 friends. Dale was a proud hippie and enjoyed entertaining with stories from his past. He was keenly interested in politics and was up-to-date on Canadian and international affairs. Dale was passionate about matters of peace, multiculturalism and aid to refugees.

A memorial service in Dale’s honour will be held on February 1st at 1 p.m. in the chapel at St. John’s Norway Cemetery and Crematorium, 256 Kingston Road, Toronto.  Following the service, a Celebration-of-Life gathering will be held at 2:30 p.m. at 74 Withrow Avenue, Toronto following the service.
