Dennis John Seward

September 19, 1926 — October 25, 2018

Dennis John Seward (Den)
Den passed away so peacefully in the comfort of his own home with the love-of-his-life, Mickey, by his side on Thursday, October 25, 2018.
Den was born September 19, 1926 in London, England and, with an independent spirit forged by a rather Dickensian childhood, Den joined The Royal Navy and served in WWII aboard HMS Alacrity and HMS Slinger.
Fending for himself, Den moved to Canada in 1952, finding work with the Department of Highways, acquiring land in northern Ontario for the fledgling Trans-Canada Highway project.
In a little café on a rainy night in Port Arthur (Thunder Bay), Den also fell madly in love with Marjorie Ward (Mickey) and they began their 63 years together.
Moving his young family to Toronto, Den worked as the Director of Planning and Development for North York where he played a key role in assembling and preserving the incredible greenway along the Don River West valley. Later, he worked as a General Manager for Tridel and, after earning his AACI credential, Den founded DJ Seward Appraisals.
Den loved his beautiful home in the valley, a sanctuary from the bustling city, where he enjoyed gardening, birds, and well-deserved naps in his special late-afternoon sunny nook.
Den was always a man in motion. He lived life passionately and energetically. He loved the ocean and long, fast walks. He was a great swimmer and an avid squash player. A long standing member of the Toronto Cricket Club, Den still played a mean game of doubles well into his 80s!
Most of all, though, Den loved his family dearly: his soulmate, Mickey; children Catherine (Norm), Julia (Phil), Jane (Damir), Lisa (Tony), Patrick; grandchildren Ryan, Christopher, Alexander (deceased), Ben (Chantal), Carly, Gemma, Mackenzie, Teah, Tyler, Reilly, Jack, Sebastien, Sophia, Olivia.
Huge thanks to our Dad's wonderful care-giving team: Marry, Gloria, Daniel, Beatrice, Jonalyn, Agnes, Arlene, Gladys, Evelyn, and Dr. Goldman. They helped us keep our promise to care for Dad at home with his beloved family.
In Den's honour, friends are invited to visit with the Seward family Thursday, November 1, 2018, 2 – 5 p.m. in the Woodbridge Room at The Country Club, 20 Lloyd Street, Woodbridge, ON. Donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada would be welcome.
