A Life of Strength, Love, and Generosity

Born in 1929 in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Ellen was the eldest of eight siblings. She left home as a young woman in search of a better life, settling in Guelph, Ontario. There, she met her husband, John, and together they welcomed their beloved son, John Matthew. She also gave birth to another son, James, who tragically passed away in infancy.

A hardworking, fiercely protective and deeply devoted to family, Ellen took on many jobs to provide for her family. Her generosity knew no bounds—she was always willing to help those in need. After losing her husband, she moved to Oakville to be near son John, daughter-in-law Sarah, and grandchildren, Jack, Bethan, and Madelaine. She quickly became a beloved figure in their community, known for her warmth and engaging spirit.

Ellen embraced life’s adventures, from trips across Canada to celebrating milestone birthdays at Canadian Idol and Las Vegas. She shared a special bond with her niece Gwen Taylor and loved her family deeply.

Her greatest legacy is her son John, who, along with Sarah, mourns her passing. Her spirit lives on in her grandchildren, who carry forward her love, strength, and independence.

As John once described her;

A hero.

An icon.

A bit of a drama queen.

Ellen will be laid to rest in Guelph beside her husband, John. A memorial gathering will take place in spring/summer 2025. In lieu of flowers, donations to www.hgtfoundation.com are welcome.
