Elli Kottas

September 18, 1942 — January 23, 2022

Toronto

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Elli Kottas.

She peacefully passed on Sunday January 23rd, 2022 at the age of 79, surrounded by loved ones. Elli was a beloved wife to Nikolaus for 57 years and an extremely loving, caring and thoughtful mother to her three children George, Polixeni and Stavros. She was a very proud yiayia to her four grandchildren, Spiro, Elli-Marie, Nicoletta and Nicholas. She will be forever loved and missed dearly as they all had an amazing connection with her.

Elli was born in Dipotamia, Kastoria, Greece and was one of many children of Kaliopi and Stavros Poursanidis. She was a loving sister to her older siblings, Elizabeth, Charalambos, Olimpia and now Elli will rejoice with her parents and brothers, Georgios and Yianni in heaven. Elli lived a simple and humble life. She met her husband, fell in love and moved to Canada in 1968, on the SS Americanis with their eldest son while pregnant with twins. She was a faithful woman who did her prayers every night and would attend church as much as she could, or ask her grandchildren to light a candle and bring her andithero. Elli loved cooking, trying new recipes or making up her own recipes and would always say “if you're going to cook do it with love”. She enjoyed shopping, drinking piña coladas, playing her lotto tickets and going out for coffee while listening to pondiaka. She also loved making dolmades and keftedes for her son George, watching Days of Our Lives with her daughter Polixeni and going to Red  Lobster with her son Stavros.

She was loved by anyone who met her. She became friends with all her neighbours, always thinking of them and being generous by bringing them food or gifts for their children. She loved talking to her siblings and her friends on the phone daily about anything and everything. Besides being proud of her grandchildren she was also extremely proud of her gardens. She was an avid gardener and had the prettiest flowers in the whole city. Elli also had the best vegetable garden to make the tastiest foods and lots of fruit trees to make her delicious jams. She loved tending to her plants both inside and outside the house. She enjoyed travelling, especially when she visited family in Greece and the U.S., and when she travelled with her grandchildren. Her contagious smile, kind heart and caring spirit will live on in all the family, friends and neighbours who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed, but not forgotten and continue to live in our hearts and memories until we meet again.
