Elsie Mahoney

d. May 25, 2022

Elsie Mahoney, dearly loved mother of Ken Mahoney and Sheila Hurley, died peacefully at St. Patrick's Home, Ottawa, on May 25, 2022, following complications resulting from a fall at her home earlier this Spring.

Elsie's 98 years were marked by courage and sacrifice as she left the Saskatchewan farm of her late parents, Julia and Andrew Meyer, to join the Woman's Army Corps in WWII to become a cook trainee for the Canadian Armed Forces. She met her husband, Cecil J. Mahoney, while both were stationed in Ottawa, and they made a happy life for their family in Windsor, Ontario, before re-locating to Ottawa. Cecil died suddenly at the age of 44, leaving Elsie age 40 to raise their family alone. She did this with her trademark stoicism and determination, working as a hospital cook until her retirement. She loved her only surviving sibling, Harvey Meyer of Burnaby B.C. - her baby brother she said. She will be fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews and sister-in-law in Western Canada. Elsie was very close to Sheila and Ken,as well as their spouses, Ron Hurley, and the late Gail Mahoney. She was so proud of her grandchildren, Wayne and Chris Mahoney (April) and Alison Lusignan (Mike) and Sandra Hurley (Jim Duy). Elsie delighted in her great - grandchildren Emily, Noah and Jackie, and loved to hear about their activities and to spend special occasions in their company.

Elsie had many friends, especially the Robertson and Murphy families, who treated her as one of their own.

Elsie's was a life well-lived, and we will feel her loss always.
