It is with great sadness, that we announce the peaceful passing of Errol Edwin Edwards, better known as, Jerry. Born in Port of Spain, Trinidad on May 22nd, 1938, Jerry grew up in Calvary hill and attended Nelson Street School. He emigrated to Toronto in 1969. Jerry considered himself a Canadian once he surpassed, in years, the amount of time he lived in Canada versus Trinidad. His light went out on April 28th, 2020 at Michael Garron Hospital.
He is predeceased by his parents Cyril and Ruby Edwards and siblings Joan, Ulric (Polka), and Reuben. He is survived by siblings Lennard (Raffie) and Vivienne. He is also survived by his children: Avril Edwards Campo, Alicia Edwards Cox and Andre Edwards. Grandchildren: Roxanne and Ramon Campo, Randell Cox, Nathania and Nathifa Edwards. And great-grandchildren: Jourdan Samaroo, Cayden and Ayden Campo. Uncle of Carolyn "Peggy", Deborah, Roger, Gail, Nicole, Gary, Wesley, Paula, Michelle, Marcelle, Beverly, Allison "Trudy", Stephenson "Rambo" (deceased), Christopher and Kurt. Relative of the Alonzo's, Glasgow's, Maynard's and Waterman’s.
Jerry also had many chosen family members. Jerry said many times “I’m a lover not a fighter” and it showed, with those he loved, who also loved him back. Pearl Waterman, the mother of his children, Doris Jeffers and family, Lyris Greaves and family, and, ex-wife, Ethel Edwards and family. He was great great-grandfather, great-grandfather, grandfather, father, godfather, brother and uncle to many. He was also a very good friend to lifelong pally-wals Ruthven “Windy” St. Louis and Whiteman plus the many more he gained along the way.
Jerry was known for a few other things. His love of the colour green. He was referred to as “the man in the green suit”. He also had a car he spoke about fondly called Josephine. His cooking, cussing, his loudmouth and his laugh. The phrase “Dah is you. Not me.” Or “Look at knuckles!!” His dancing was unique, and he could slow dance with the best of them. He used to DJ and had all the latest songs. He loved music and would make CDs and DVDs for us to enjoy. They were mostly of Trinidad carnival and all the competitions.
He liked to tell stories and make joke, or give people fatigue, but could take it in return. He liked his rum but with diabetes moved on to vodka and Old Oak white rum, but don’t forget his Carib (beer). His reason was that clear liquor had less sugar in it. He also indulged in 420 often and said he enjoyed it more before it became legal. Jerry was a skilled tradesman as well. First, he learned shoemaking, he then became an electrician and tailor. He made a lot of his own clothing as well as outfits for others and loved his hats. He could also “bend a mas” and often helped with costuming for Caribana.
Two hours before his passing, Jerry was surrounded, virtually via video call, by Michelle Jeffers Basha and daughter Shauna Basha, Tracy Greaves and Sheryl (Aggie Oye) Jeffers St. Louis. Jerry was surrounded by laughter and love.
Jerry will be greatly missed and forever loved!!
