Ewald Edward Eder
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ewald Edward Eder on May 17th 2021 in his 87th year, with his daughter by his side. Born August 5th 1933 on the German/Lithuanian border, he was raised in Landkreis Braunschweig Germany. Ed had a life filled with adventure. He traveled the world, served in the army as paratrooper reaching the rank of lieutenant, spoke many languages, was an expert geologist and a skilled equestrian. In 1956 Ed began his journey to Canada, he worked in many mines as an exploration geologist and saw much of Canada by air, foot, dogsled, horseback and boat. In the early 60’s he purchased a large plot of land in the Rainy River district of Ontario. It is here that his heart always laid. Once Ed retired he began his second career as a hobby farmer and an enviable vegetable gardener. Over the years he had many animals in the barn he built himself but his favourite was always goats. He tended to them lovingly for many years. His greatest joy of all was his daughter and grandchildren who he moved closer to in his last years. He often spoke of his love of Rainy River, the people who were like his family and the land that he loved so much. Ed is preceded by his parents Ernst and Anna Eder of Germany. He is survived by his daughter Christina (Brian) and grandchildren Cole and Hailey. Beloved brother of Gretel (Walter) and their children Huey, Regina, Christiana of Germany. Following Ed’s wishes he has been cremated. For those wishing to honour Ed’s memory and in recognition of how much he loved farming and his land the family asks for donations to 4-H Ontario.
