FRANCIS ROBERT JOYCE, B.A., M.A.
Rob Joyce was born on December 15, 1939, in Chengkiang, Hunnan Province, China, to missionaries, Raymond and Mona Joyce. He spent much of his childhood in China, finally arriving in Canada in the 1950s. He died peacefully in his 83rd year on April 21, 2022, at Michael Garron Hospital, Toronto.
Rob’s graduate work in Islamic studies took him to France and North Africa with his wife Julie in the late 1960s. His curiosity about the world and interest in other cultures and religions saw him travel extensively throughout his life; he organized numerous trips to China for the Chefoo Schools Association, his childhood alma mater.
Rob was an avid sailor in his younger years, as well as a voracious reader and book collector. He found joy in the “little things” in life (especially the beauty of nature), had an appetite for fine cuisine and wine, and loved to sing or spend hours in deep conversation – often punctuated by his unique sense of humour and infectious laugh. His faith in Christ remained unwavering throughout his life, carrying him through many difficult times.
Rob had a deep love and devotion for his three daughters, Heather Flowers (Mark), Ramona Joyce, and Anne Joyce (Jacek) and 10 grandchildren. He also leaves his friend and wife, Julie Joyce (née Silverthorne), his brother, the Rev. Keith Joyce (Elinor), and eight nieces and nephews. Rob was predeceased in 2020 by his sister, Margery Palomino.
A funeral service will take place for Rob on Monday, May 9, 2022 at 11:00 am at Little Trinity Anglican Church, 425 King St East, Toronto. There will be a visitation at 10:00 am at the Enoch Turner Schoolhouse, 106 Trinity St – directly behind the church. A light-lunch reception will follow the service, also at the Enoch Turner Schoolhouse. Departure for the interment at Westminster Cemetery, 5830 Bathurst St, will be by 2:00 pm.
Should you wish to make a donation in Rob's memory, the family suggests FFM Ministry or a cancer charity of your choice.
