Geoffrey Guy William Welsh January 5, 1967 - March 15 2022.
Passed peacefully at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto after a year long battle with Leukemia. Geoffrey is survived by Rena Welsh(mother), Ralph Welsh(father) and Suzanne Welsh(sister).
Born and raised in Etobicoke, Geoff had a natural affinity for computers at an early age. Graduating from Wilfred Laurier with a degree in computer engineering, he quickly moved into his lifelong career and passion. Geoffrey started his career as employee number three at a high-tech startup joining his closest childhood friend , Steve Douglas with dreams to take over the world. Transforming his passion for building modems and hosting message boards into a lifelong successful technology career, spanning over three decades.
Geoffreys dedication, commitment and passion for his craft, made him a key contributor to the success of the organizations that were lucky to have him. Geoffrey changed the life of the people he mentored by sharing his expertise, along the way. However, for those who worked closest with Geoffrey, they understood that during critical issues, when in the zone, it was not time for small chat. A fond memory we have, during a company outage at InSystems, a colleague entered the data centre , where Geoffrey was juggling issues like Tom Cruise in cocktail. His colleague picked up a random item on a shelf and asked Geoffrey “what’s this”? In his stern demeanor, looking at his colleague he said “Mark, this is not the time to play what’s this….” For many of us, whenever technical conversation goes off track at any time, we echo the simple phrase… “this is not the time to play what’s this”.
Geoffreys knowledge and skill was truly second to none, dare we say genius, even though he was his biggest critic. Whether it was during a desk side chat, a shot of tequila at the bar, or one of his famous verbose emails, Geoffrey was always willing to take the time to help those around him (and correct them) …unless he was knee deep, saving the planet, playing ‘Team Fortress’ during his lunch break…of course.
He will be greatly missed
