George passed away quietly on November 16, 2022 at his Brampton retirement home where he has resided for the past 7 years.
Pre deceased by his wife Ivy Gilmer and love of his life to whom he was married for 75 years (nee Hancock) on July 11, 2018.
Long time resident of Toronto and more recently a resident of Brampton’s Greenway retirement residence.
George was born and raised in Georgetown, Ontario. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force early in WW2 and went through training in various Canadian locations including Galt, Winnipeg and Calgary. Shortly after marrying Ivy in 1943, he was deployed to England and carried out his role as Wireless Air Gunner on Wellington bombers with a rank of Warrant Officer. He escaped the war without major injury but sadly lost several acquaintances; his best friend and best man at his wedding Ralph Featherstone was lost in an aircraft accident. Following the war he returned to Toronto and shortly after moved into the family home on Ypres Rd. George wanted to become a truck driver but following his wife’s advice, he worked for Eatons as a buyer for the catalog, raised a son, Ken Gilmer, a resident of Brampton, married to Sandra Gilmer and a daughter, Dianne Keller, a resident of Florida. He spent much time prior to retirement at his Georgian Bay cottage and with his boat. George loved his family, he certainly enjoyed driving regularly to visit his daughter in Florida and to visit his son and grandchildren including all their family dinners. He also enjoyed his long list of cars including 3 Mustangs and an Acura Integra. He was able to drive safely until his early 90’s when poor eyesight resulted in the loss of his license. George maintained an inquisitive nature throughout his life, especially towards technology.
George leaves behind two loving Grandchildren; Chris Gilmer of Caledon (and his wife Yvonne) and Erin Gilmer of Ottawa (and her partner James) and four great Grandchildren; Hannah-Bella Jean, Gwendolyn Ivy and Victoria Diana Pearl of Caledon and two year old great Grandson; Callum George of Ottawa. Callum has visited George several times in the past 2 years and George loved those visits.
At George’s request there will not be a service. His ashes will be scattered together with Ivy’s.
