Obituary for George Gregory Ward
George Gregory Ward passed away in his 90th year on January 12, 2022. He leaves behind his loving wife of 70 years Anne, his sisters Doris (Armin) and Sonia (Rod) and his brother Dave (Darlene), his 2 children Janis (Dave) and Geordie (Penny), his grandchildren Adam, Carolynn, Meaghan (Chris), Jessica (Phil) and Kathryn and his great grandchild Fionn.
George was a talented athlete in his younger days. He played hockey in the New York Rangers farm system until his career was cut short when he was hit both high and low while carrying the ball during a football game. Despite knee operations he continued to play semi pro baseball in Richmond Hill where he pitched a no hitter and won an Eastern Canadian championship.
This determination to overcome obstacles helped George in all aspects of his life. He rose to a 2nd level management position during a long career at Bell Canada. He was put in charge of the installation of the phone system at Pearson airport when it first was constructed. At the time of his retirement, George managed the Towers district of downtown Toronto, the highest revenue and most complex district the company services.
George dedicated his life to the service of those in need. He held many offices including President in the Hustler Young Mens Bible Class. The Class supported and donated to many charitable organizations. As a member of the Class, George would serve meals to the homeless at the Scott Mission on Thanksgiving Day. On Christmas eve, they would deliver Scott Mission food hampers to needy families. George served as President of the Hustler Young Men’s Bible Class Foundation for decades. This foundation has donated over $500,000 to deserving charities over the last 10 years alone.
George would often say that ‘Winners never quit and quitters never win.” Despite 5 knee surgeries, a hip replacement, a shoulder replacement, a nerve shield replacement which led to brain surgery and a stroke – George never quit. He fought his way back to be the loveable husband, father and grandpa we will always treasure. His greatest joys were his wife and family. We will always love him.
A memorial will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations can be made to the Scott Mission
