Georgina Rae Grey (nee Beechey)

June 9, 1925 – December 30, 2020

It is with sadness that the family of Georgina Rae Grey announces her death on December 30, 2020 at 95 years of age.  Rae was born in Bristol, England, the only child of Dorothy Venn Beechey and Herbert W. Beechey.  She attended Red Maids’ School in Bristol and was in the Women’s Royal English Navy during WWII maintaining aircraft engines. Her lifelong love of books was recognized by her position as Bristol Library Assistant. Her British roots remained strong throughout her life, including her love of a cup of tea.

Rae married the late Michael (Mike) Glanville Grey on July 10, 1945, and they were married 67 years before Mike’s death. They immigrated to Canada in September, 1947, as part of the Drew scheme.  They at first lived in Hamilton and then Toronto, eventually arriving at northern Etobicoke where Rae lived in the same house on the Humber River ravine for 63 years

Rae and Mike were members of the Port Credit Yacht Club, Mimico Cruising Club and Bruce Trail Association.  Their interest in boating led them to sell British combination house boats and RVs under the name Marine Caravans for a few years.  Rae also loved to knit blankets for the Humane Society Guardian Angels program and was a dedicated member of the Rexdale Book Club.

Rae will greatly missed by her daughters Laura Ives (Richard), Gina Grey, granddaughter Heather Vita (Domenic), great grandson Michael, great granddaughter, Emily.  She will also be missed by her many close friends and past neighbours who knew her as a strong, upbeat personality.

Special thanks to Home Instead Senior Care, Dr. Saldanha and the staff at Parkland-on-the-Glen Retirement home who cared for Rae for the last 2.5 years, LHIN, and the staff of Credit Valley Hospital.  At Rae’s request cremation has been arranged and due to COVID-19 restrictions no formal service will be held.

Please consider a contribution in her memory to the charity of your choice instead of flowers.
