Osman Harper Mustafa

March 25, 1943 ~ March 26, 2022 (age 79)

Osman Harper Mustafa passed away on Saturday March 26th at the age of 79, in Milton, Ontario.  His battle with Alzheimer’s disease finally over. No more suffering, no more pain. He is finally at peace and reunited with his mother, who he kept wanting to see everyday as his dementia progressed.

A private family funeral service is being held on Thursday March 31st to honour the larger than life man that he was. He is survived by his wife Semral, daughters Ayshe, Kezban and Nilay, and sons-in-law Helder and Huseyin.  He was a loving grandfather to Aylin, Rui, Noah, Jesse and Asim and a loving brother to his siblings Ali (deceased) Tansel, Zeki, Nuvit, Umral and Hasip. Uncle, cousin and friend to many.

Osman was born and brought up in Cyprus.  Everyone that knew him, and so many did, knew his passion for soccer. He lived and breathed it and was a very good soccer player. He played in various clubs from his early teens into early adulthood. When he wasn’t playing the game, he was coaching or watching it.

Having worked in the copper mines in Cyprus as a young adult, provided him with the opportunity immigrate to Canada to work in the nickel mines in Manitoba. He moved his young family in hopes for a better future. When he realized they couldn’t bear the brutal Manitoba winters, they moved to Ontario, where his other two daughters were born.

Osman had a big personality.  He was kind, thoughtful and loved by many.  He was resourceful and an organizer who played a big role in bringing the Turkish Cypriot community together.  Soccer teams, picnics, Turkish holiday celebrations and more. He had a great sense of humour and was known for stories he told and making everyone laugh, young and old. He was always willing to help anyone who was in need.

His family watched helplessly as Alzheimer’s changed him. He became distant and quiet, with fear in his eyes and doubt in every move. They are thankful that he is finally free of Alzheimer’s and ask that in lieu of flowers, friends and family donate to Alzheimer’s Society.
