Herbert Harris Perry

August 15, 1928 – February 12, 2021

Herb passed away peacefully at home, at the age of 92. Gladys, his loving wife of more than 70 years, will miss him dearly. His daughters Susan and Carolyn and son-in-law Derek Ellis will always have special memories of him. Herb was predeceased by daughters Cathryn (2019) and Bonnie (2016). He is survived by grandchildren Robin (Dale), Perry, Tesni, Trevor and Chelsea and his brother David (Joan). He was happy to have great-granddaughter Scarlett in his life.

In this time of sadness, we also celebrate a long life well-lived. Growing up in Toronto, Herb had many adventures with his cousin and best friend, Bob Ormsby. Herb met Gladys in 1946 and they were married in 1950. They lived in Toronto, Niagara Falls and Burlington as they raised their four daughters. Herb and Gladys built a cottage at Big Bay, near Wiarton, where they enjoyed many summers swimming, sailing, and barbecuing. In 1988, they moved to Owen Sound to be nearer to the cottage. They lived in Owen Sound until 2017 when they moved to Kanata to be close to Susan and Carolyn.

Herb had a varied career that he enjoyed well past the usual retirement age. He was executive director of the Certified General Accountants Association from 1964 to 1979. In 2016, he was proud to be recognized by CGAA as “one of Canada’s top 100 accountants who have made a difference.” He was bestowed with the title “Fellow” CGA. Herb led the Institute of Association Executives and was a director on many charity and non-profit boards, before becoming an association consultant, workshop leader and keynote speaker. He was the author of the first editions of two Canadian bestsellers for the non-for-profit sector, Call to Order and The Board – A Winning Team. Second editions were co-authored with daughter Susan, along with an additional book, The Art of Chairing.

Herb valued his family, friendships, and faith. We will all miss his quick wit and the stories he loved to share.
