Hilde left this earth with grace and dignity at the Woodhaven residence in Markham, her home for almost 8 years, after a long and debilitating illness which struck her initially not long after the death of her husband. She joins her late husband of 58 years, Olev (2012) and first-born son Thomas (1956-1971). She leaves behind her children Anne, Robert and Victor, her dear sister Rose and nieces Jane and Kathleen. Grandmother to five.
Hilde was born in Vorumaa, Estonia and met her future husband (from Tallinn, Estonia) in Toronto, Canada. They enjoyed over three years in good health together at the Woodhaven, where they lived as they had most of their lives, with separate bedrooms and meeting for meals. They gained some notoriety over their frequent and oft heated “discussions” in the dining room, which nobody else could take offence at since they were speaking in Estonian. Hilde continued her daily fitness regime of outdoor walking for as long as she could.
Hilde and her sister Rose, the only members of their family that survived the horrors of the Second World War, had an unbreakable bond that lasted almost ninety years. As a teenage war refugee, Hilde was welcomed by the British and trained to be a registered nurse in London, England. While studying and working to become a nurse, she enjoyed the tea dances at the Savoy Hotel, walking among the flowers in Kew Gardens and the occasional live theatre and ballet performance.
Upon emigrating to Canada, she settled in Toronto, met and married her husband, Olev and had four children: Thomas, Anne, Robert and Victor. Hilde and her family moved to Unionville in the early 1970's where she enjoyed her many walks around the Unionville pond with her constant companion, Smokey. Well before it was popular, Hilde was an avid redecorating DIYer. She and her children became very skillful at hanging wallpaper and painting. Throughout her life Hilde adopted the simple view that all things were potentially do-able when tackled in an organized and meticulous manner. If something was not readily available, she would make it and ‘build it to last.‘ The family camper trailer contained many of these custom items - from sleeping mattresses that doubled as beach mattresses to the ‘eating tent' that hosted many family feasts.
She was devoted to her family and to ensuring that they adopted healthy living habits. She went out of her way to purchase fruit and vegetables from Farmers' markets and to frequent pick-your-own farms. Her cheery smile could always be seen after picking her 30th full quart of raspberries. Often , only the movement of the upper branches of the raspberry bushes signalled her presence, since her barely five-foot frame was furiously picking the "best ones from underneath." Her love of gardens and growing her own food continued throughout her life. We hope she is enjoying some new potatoes and organic corn in Heaven.
She was greatly loved by sister, Rose and her nieces, Jane and Kathleen (whom she treated like her own children), who will never forget her kindness, generosity and compassion.
Our sincere thanks to the staff at the Woodhaven for their kind, compassionate and respectful care.
