Hoda Marie Nassim (née Banoub)
July 19, 1945-September 18, 2021
Surrounded by family, Hoda passed away after her long-time battle with cancer. She joins her parents, Laure and Fouad Daoud Banoub, dear aunts and uncles who preceded her, as well as her brother-in-law Maher Khouzam. She was cherished by her sister, Salwa Banoub Khouzam, her children Dr. Mark Nassim (Caroline) and Tania Gauder (Warren), and her grandchildren: David Gauder-Lerer, Maia Gauder and Malek Nassim, as well as her nieces Chérine, Ingrid and Myriam (Lisa) Khouzam.
Born in Heliopolis (Cairo), music played a major part in Hoda’s life from early on. She learned to play the harp and piano at a young age and worked to become an accomplished concert pianist and harpist, graduating from the Egyptian Higher Institute of Music. Hoda left Egypt to get married and study at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec during which she made a name for herself as a musical scholar and distinguished performer. Settling in Ottawa she continued her career in music, teaching privately and at the University of Ottawa, performing on request at local events and ceremonies. She was an active participant in the local chapter of ORMTA and MAC and well-known in Ottawa’s musical community. Later in life, she completed her degrees in Sociology and Education (French Specialist), joining the OCDSB to teach elementary school. Hoda remained passionate about her students’ learning and musical arts throughout her life.
Her family wishes to thank the Oncology and Palliative Care teams at The Ottawa Hospital for their excellent care and support.
