In Loving Memory of Ian William Garratt

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Ian William Garratt, who peacefully departed on Sunday, February 16th, 2025, at the age of 87, surrounded by his beloved family at Credit Valley Hospital. Ian was born on January 17th, 1938, and is lovingly remembered by his wife, Vanessa, his children Avril, Olivia (Eddie), Gabrielle, and Paul, and his cherished grandchildren, eight grandsons who were the light of his life. He is also survived by his siblings, Don (Ethel) and Annette (Bill), and was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Eunice, as well as his sister Mary Louise (Lorne).

Ian's life was defined by his love for music, a passion he nurtured from an early age. After studying at the University of Toronto, he devoted his career to music, becoming an accomplished singer and pianist. He was best known for being the proud owner of The Canadian Academy of Vocal Music, where he dedicated over 50 years of his life to teaching and inspiring students. Ian’s commitment to vocal instruction touched the lives of countless individuals, and his legacy as an educator and musician continues to resonate through the many students he mentored.

Outside of his professional achievements, Ian’s family recalls a life rich with warmth, joy, and togetherness. He filled their days with laughter, love, and unforgettable memories—from summer cottage trips and family barbecues to dance competitions and Myrtle Beach vacations. He was a man of immense kindness and positivity, always with a gentle spirit, even as he faced the challenges of dementia and Alzheimer's in his later years. His unwavering optimism and joy for life were truly remarkable.

Ian’s passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of his family, friends, students, and all who knew him. He was a cherished uncle, neighbor, and friend whose impact will never be forgotten. The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff at Credit Valley Hospital for their exceptional care and support during his time there, as well as the PSWs who helped care for him at home.

In celebration of Ian’s remarkable life, the family invites all who knew him to a Celebration of Life in May. Details will be provided closer to the date, and all are welcome to join in honoring his legacy and the joy he brought to so many.

Though he is no longer with us, Ian’s light continues to shine in the memories he leaves behind and the lives he touched.
