Allan, James Bishop (1932 05 18 - 2022 05 10)
James Bishop Allan passed away peacefully at Sunnybrook Hospital on Tuesday, May 10th,2022, just a week shy of his 90th birthday. He was supported until the very end by his daughter and caregiver Jennifer, by Joseph So, a family friend, and by wonderful visiting home-care nurses and PSWs, and consoled by a surprise visit from his daughter Nancy.
Born in Toronto, Ontario to Martin Edward Parker Allan of Bruce County and Gertrude Annie Bishop from Worcester, U.K. James was married to the late Ilona (Helen) Allan (née Tekynos)for almost 51 years. He was the loving father of Jennifer Allan and of Nancy (Oliver) Lewis, and Grandpa to Sophie and Ryan (Canberra, Australia). James was predeceased by his half-brothers William and Patrick, his half-sister Margaret and his brothers-in-law Anthony Tekynos and Werner Lueders. James is survived by his younger brother Howard (Kathleen) of Smiths Falls, his sisters-in-law Victoria (Robert) Burns, Kathleen Lueders and Martha (Peter)Singleton, and brother-in-law Joseph Tekynos; by his nephews Steve Allan and John Allan, Greg(Dee) Burns and Robert Burns, and by his great-niece Annie Allan.
James was a passionate fan of his teams, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Toronto Maple Leafs. His favourite pastimes were watching old movies, barbecuing in the backyard, and caring for assorted cats, dogs and wildlife. He loved Celtic music, Scottish bagpipes, and the classics, especially Chopin. In the summers he would travel to the Scottish games in Guelph, the flea markets in St. Jacobs, and to Niagara-on-the-Lake. He enjoyed visiting family farms in Blyth and Arthur, and attending family get-togethers in Kitchener-Waterloo and Smiths Falls. A kind and gentle man, he took on the rôle of adopted grandpa to many family friends and neighbours.
Jennifer thanks her support crew and adopted kin for their friendship and prayers during her time of caring for both James and Helen. Cremation has taken place and private family arrangements have been made for celebration and burial. As expressions of your sympathy, donations to the Toronto Wildlife Centre, or to Branch 66 of the Royal Canadian Legion, would be appreciated.
