James Nelson Bassett

July 31, 1950 — September 24, 2019

Jim passed away peacefully at the Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa, surrounded by family, after a long, bravely fought battle with prostate cancer. Born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario to Jack and Dorothy Bassett, Jim grew up with siblings John (Christine), Rick, and Laurie (Richard). Wife of Mary Catherine (née Baby) for over 40 years and father to Jennifer (Keith) and Erin (Kevin), Jim was devoted to his family, and adored his grandsons Max and Benji. Jim was brother-in-law to Garry and Ann Marie Baby and Uncle to Paula (Jaime), Christopher (Karla), Jamie (Nadia), Jeff (Chantal), and Vanessa (Steve).
Jim graduated with a B.A. from Carleton University and a B.Ed. Queen's University before beginning a long and successful English teaching career at Gravenhurst High School. Dedicated to his students, Jim left an impression on many of them during over 30 years in the classroom. Jim and Catherine retired in 2003 and enjoyed many winters in Florida as well as their retirement home on Manitoulin Island, Manitowaning Bay. An avid reader and a true Mr. Fix-It, Jim was always at home in his workshop repairing and creating. Staying active through many sports in his younger days, most recently Jim enjoyed gardening, hunting, and fishing in the bay. His neighbours will miss his beautiful whistling as he worked outside where he was happiest.
Jim was a loving and supportive husband, father, and grandpa. He took great pride in his daughters and their families, and was always there to lend a helping hand. He will be missed by many, including his dear friends Jim and Ellie Miller. Donations in his memory can be made to the charity of your choice or to the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday October 26th at the Caruso Club, 385 Haig St., Sudbury, Ontario, from noon until approximately 4:00pm. Please join friends and family to commemorate Jim's life and share memories. Lunch will be served.
