James Maxwell Laurie

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of James Maxwell Laurie at the age of 90, on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at 9:15 PM, surrounded by his loving family at his home in Scarborough, ON. He courageously fought a battle with cancer until the end.

James is survived by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Laurie (Wee Lizzie), with whom he shared nearly 70 years of love, laughter, and cherished memories. He was the proud father of Elizabeth Laurie, James Laurie, and Diane Laurie. He will be dearly missed by his grandchildren, Shalon McNamara (Robert McNamara) and Stuart Ainsworth (Shaady), as well as his seven great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved deeply.

He is also survived by his siblings, Sarah and Alexander (Nan). He was predeceased by his parents, James and Agnes, as well as his siblings, Robert (Beryl) and Elizabeth (Armand).

A devoted sports fan, James was passionate about football (soccer), along with music and cooking for his family. His love for the Glasgow Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays, and Toronto Maple Leafs was unmatched, and he treasured his moments with friends playing poker and watching the Grey Cup. His love for music spanned genres, from his admiration of Barbra Streisand, Andrea Bocelli, and Frank Sinatra to his joy of singing along to his favorite songs. He also loved reading books and watching classic films, often enjoying the old movie channels.

A proud veteran of the Korean War, James served with Her Majesty's British Army and the Reserves. He retired in 1997 as a City of Toronto Planning and Development Manager. He also contributed to his community through his roles as Vice President and Treasurer of Legion Branch 42.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the VHA, Health at Home, Dr. Joshi, the palliative care unit at Michael Garron Hospital, and all others who provided care and support in his final days.

While there will be no traditional funeral services, a celebration of life will take place in the Spring or Summer of 2025. Details will follow.

James’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of his family and friends, but his legacy of unconditional love, devotion to his family, and joy for life will continue to inspire all who knew him. His love for others, his generosity of spirit, and his kindness touched so many, and he will be remembered for the incredible man that he was.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Canadian Cancer Society in his honor.
