James Gregory McDougall

July 27, 1953 — May 26, 2023

Toronto

With sadness in our hearts, James or Jim as known by many, passed away in his 70th year on Friday, May 26, 2023, in Toronto. This was after a short but brave battle with cancer and other illnesses. Heaven gained another angel.
Survived and will remain in the hearts of his beloved sister Linda Loughran (Grant), brothers Michael McDougall (Tamra) and Shawn McDougall, all his nieces and nephews (Candace, Kristie, Brandie, Chad, Nathan, Kyle, and Kaitlyn), and many of his good friends and neighbours, who were like brothers and sisters to him. Predeceased by his parents James and Mildred McDougall, his sister Heather Luebbert, and his partner of 27 years Keith Patten.
Jim devoted over 37 years in the healthcare industry at both Grand River Hospital (K-W hospital) in the early years but for most of his career at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. His full career was in hemodialysis clinics within hospitals and his last role before retirement was as Operations Leader - Clinical Engineering working on building and opening a satellite hemodialysis unit of which he was proud. Jim was a mentor to many in dialysis theory and practice. More importantly to Jim, he collaborated with his mentor Dr. G on various hemodialysis research studies that were published in journals.
Jim was compassionate, selfless, loyal, caring, funny and an intelligent gentle giant. He loved travel and being in the water whether it was an ocean or a pool. He would spend hours given the opportunity to laze around in the water. Jim was also a wonderful storyteller and valued humour and those that made him laugh. Jim will be missed for his generous spirit and willingness to help others.
Cremation has occurred. At Jim's request, no funeral will take place. All Jim wanted was for his family to gather and have a good meal and share memories. Donations in his memory can be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada
