Janet Rosalind Calder (nee McBurney), age 69, of Mississauga, ON, passed away on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, leaving behind a well-used set of golf clubs, an outstanding recipe for spaghetti sauce and many loved ones.
Jan is survived by her high school sweetheart, love of her life, travel partner and favourite golfing companion: Doug, her loving husband. She would certainly want you to know that she often beat Doug at their favourite game over their 52 years together and enjoyed reminding him of that fact whenever possible. Jan is also survived by her daughter Melissa (Daniel) and her son Ian (Elizabeth) and her favourite family member of all: her granddaughter Etta.
Jan was welcomed into the world January 12, 1949 by her (predeceased) parents Janet and Ross McBurney and her older brother Tom. Jan worked as a legal secretary until she became a fulltime homemaker and super-mom to Melissa and Ian. From making heart sandwiches on Valentines Day to volunteering for school councils, Jan always went above and beyond the call of motherhood. She also passed on her biting sense of humour and love of a good sale to her children.
Although quiet and shy by nature, Jan had a competitive side that included winning football pools, poker games and of course putting tournaments. An optimist at heart, Jan always believed that the Toronto Maple Leafs, her favourite team, would win the cup again in her lifetime and would debate any naysayers with an energy the Leaf's lineup could learn from. The spirit of Christmas lived in Jan year-round and those who knew her well were not surprised to hear holiday carols being played at her house in mid-March.
Jan was very clear about not wanting a sorrowful funeral but rather she wanted a gathering of good food, good friends and rock n' roll music. A Celebration of Life is being held on September 22, 2018 (1-5 pm) at BraeBen Golf Course. Although Jan loved flowers, she requested that none be sent but rather donations be made to your favourite charity or for mourners to spend time with their loved ones.
Our family would like to thank the nurses at the Palliative Oncology Department at Credit Valley Hospital. They are angels on earth and made an incredibly challenging time easier on everyone. Often one to give advice we think Jan would want to impart the following wisdom to you: Keep your head down while golfing, be kind until it's time to tell people how it is and to remember that life is all about making choices. Above all she would want those left behind to do what makes them happy.
