Jean Classen, the strong and independent Marvelville farm girl, passed away suddenly on May 4 in her 89th year, with family at her side. Daughter of John Brunton McVey and Annie Barrie King, Jean grew up as the middle child of 10: Grace, Peggy, Bill, Jim, Jackie, Jean, Anne, Helen, King and Barry. There was a lot to do on the McVey dairy farm and Jean loved driving tractors, getting into trouble with sister Anne, delivering eggs with brother Bill, and devouring the books at the one-room schoolhouse. Friends described her as the penultimate listener, trusted confidante and a strong independent pragmatist.
She married twice and had six children, Karon (Jack), Noah (Andrea), Allan (Judy), Harold (Michelle), Laurie, and Rowan (Varia). Her family tree includes 7 grandchildren: Jessica, Erica, Trina, Sabrina, Brittany, Cameron, and Harrison; and 8 great-grandchildren: Emma, Sarah, Lincoln, Tyler, Ryder, Ashlynn, Brooklyn, and Brock. She loved them all. Her life journey included time living in Toronto, Victoria, and for the last 30 years, the Glebe in Ottawa was home.
Jean completed her Bachelor of Philosophy with distinction at Carleton University. Her work was office administration in government and private companies. She was generous with her time volunteering. As a member of the Abbotsford Senior Center for over 25 years, she received an Ontario Volunteer Service award for her work as Treasurer and apple pie maker extraordinaire.
Jean believed in exercise - specifically, exercise for the brain. She was a voracious reader. She also did crossword puzzles, cryptograms, and sudoku puzzles constantly. She loved playing Euchre and Mah-jongg and liked to win, even if it meant being a little underhanded at times. A competitive spirit right up until her final day. She left a mark. Those of you who knew Jean know what we mean. Rest in peace, Jean. It was a life well lived. Donations to Abbotsford House Ottawa would be appreciated. https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/19868
A virtual Celebration of Jean's life is being arranged. Details will be posted when arrangements are finalized.
