Jean (Corning) Duffy 1928-2016
Mother, sister, nurse, grandmother, friend and lover of music and good company. Jean passed away June 20 at the Sherwood Nursing Home, Maple, with family at her side after a lengthy battle with dementia.
Predeceased by her husband, J.O. Duffy, Jean leaves her children Jim (Joanne Gallagher), Joe and Liz (Rob MacLean). She adored her grandsons, Alex and Graeme MacLean, and will be dearly missed by sister Hilda Corkum. She was predeceased by sisters Betty and Anne and brothers Jack and Bill. Jean was a favourite of many nieces and nephews.
Born in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, Jean grew up in Yarmouth and attended nursing school at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax. Jean always said she was very lucky to have known from the start that she wanted to be a nurse. She embarked on a major adventure when she left Nova Scotia to work at the Laurentide Hospital in Grand'Mere, Quebec. There, she met Ossie, her future husband, and spent 40 years building a family and a large circle of friends. Ossie died in 1990 and Jean later moved to Brockville to live near sister Betty West. In 2011, she moved to Toronto to be near Liz and family.
Jean was very close to her sisters and made friends wherever she went. We'll miss her sense of humour and the twinkle in her eye.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in Jean's name to the charity of your choice would be welcomed. Cremation has taken place and a memorial will be held at a later date
