Green – Jean Myrtle (nee STEPHENS)

July 20, 1946 – June 9, 2021 (age 74)

It is with a very heavy heart that we announce that our beloved mommy and Nanny, Jean (nee Stephens), passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 9, 2021. She is survived by her daughters Pam Miller and Nancy Kerr (Brian). As well as her grandkids April, Jared, Travis and Ryan, Kyle, Sydney. She also leaves behind her brother Jerry (Sylvia) and sisters Joyce Oosterholt, Shirley Scharf (Gerry) and Cathy Betts (Gord), and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents Norman Stephens & Eileen Gagnon and her brothers Ronnie and Roy and sister Donna.

Jean was a long time employee of the Ottawa Catholic School Board. She was one of the first female custodians at the Board and was very proud of this fact! She loved working at the schools and being with kids of all ages. She took pride in her work and was awarded for her seniority shortly before she retired at 55.

She taught herself to knit and play the guitar. She used to keep pairs of mittens that she had made for the kids at school who'd forgotten theirs. Once her preemie grandson was born, she started knitting hats and booties for the premature newborns at CHEO. She loved listening to and singing country music. She enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, camping and riding her motorcycle.

Jean was a loving and compassionate woman who would offer help to anyone. She was always stopping for hitchhikers, offering family and friends a place to stay if they needed it. Unfortunately, her early onset of dementia at 57 took a lot of time from her grandchildren – something we will always be sad about. She always looked forward to retirement and having lots of grandkids. Hopefully, she will now watch over them from Heaven.

We would like to thank the Palliative Care team at Granite Ridge, in particular Lissa and Grace, for their excellent care during her final days there. Plans for celebrating Jean’s life will be made when it is safe to do so.

Donations may be made in her honour to the Dementia/Alzheimer’s Society.
