J. Marjorie McLaren (Tierney)

September 14, 1930 — August 31, 2022

Cornwall

Jean ‘Marjorie’ McLaren (Tierney), at the age of 91, at St. Joseph's Continuing Care Centre, Cornwall with family beside her on August 31, 2022. Born in Hawkesbury, Ontario on September 14, 1930, Marjorie moved to Cornwall, Ontario with her parents and worked at Ives Bedding Company. She met her husband, Stanley “Lyle” McLaren, at St John’s Presbyterian Church (Cornwall) and they were married on September 1, 1951. Throughout her life Marjorie excelled at being a daughter, wife, friend, secretary, mother, grandmother, knitter, costume-maker, and cupcake baker. She took great pleasure in her work with “Group 13” at St. John’s Presbyterian Church helping to organize the annual fall luncheon/bazaar and sharing her passion for creating Christmas decorations and crafts, many of which became part of an annual display in the front windows of McLaren Real Estate on Second Street East.

Marjorie has provided many people with wonderful, loving and often funny memories. She will be remembered for her gifts of handmade sweaters, toques, mitts, and matching Christmas Eve pajamas (a tradition still continued), finding room for another plate at the table and “another potato in the pot”, and always having enough beds, blankets and pillows for family and friends (old and new). She loved serving roast beef dinners, chocolate chip muffins warm from the oven, and baking ‘’your favourite pie.” Her annual Canada Day get-together with friends and family was her summertime highlight. We will miss her “love of all things Christmas” and her calls to talk about curling, the weather, the latest news, or just to see “what you are up to.” Saturday shopping will not be the same without her. Her final years with dementia and COVID were not always easy. Despite that, Marjorie’s last days were spent in peace, surrounded by the family she loved.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children Brent (late Shelley), Stephen (Patti), David (Ivana) and Jane, and her many grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, their spouses, partners, and families, as well as her friends. She is predeceased by her husband Lyle McLaren, her parents Patrick Tierney and Gladys Harding, sisters Edith and Eileen and brother-in-law Jack Boardman, and grandson Curtis McLaren. In keeping with Marjorie’s wishes, a private gathering will be held on a later date.

The family would like to thank the staff of Mantle House at St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre where Marjorie lived her last year with dignity, respect and a quality of life that would not have been possible without their care and support.
