Joan Mary Brown
(Nee Nannini)
Passed peacefully Dec 24/18 at The West Oak Village in Oakville, after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer's. A loving, caring, compassionate and responsible daughter, sister, cousin, granddaughter, niece, wife, mother, aunt, mother in law grandmother, caregiver & friend. Sunday drives with her family, summers in Huntsville, family gatherings and 5 years at Bloor Collegiate were the joys of her youth. A graduate of the Toronto Teachers College started her teaching career with a reserve in North Vancouver where she occasionally was paid if the parish had a good week. Mother of 3 boys ( Paul (deceased) Vancouver, Peter-Montreal & Tim-Toronto) several cats & dogs relocated 11 times across the country, never a complaint (maybe once, en route to a remote logging camp on the west coast of Vancouver Island). Resumed her teaching career when her family had grown and truly met her calling with special needs teenagers and young adults at Blakelock High School in Oakville with a great team of teaching caregivers. A marvelous cook and gracious host with a wonderful sense of humour & infectious laugh. Hosted countless dinner parties. An avid reader and member of many book clubs, including Elder College where a professor noted on one of Joan's book reviews that it was as good as anything he'd read in the New York Times. Outside of her love for family and friends was her lifelong love of opera cultured by her father and nurtured by cousin Aldo Maggiorotti who hosted a weekly opera show for over 50 years on CHUM and CJRT. Between family, opera, bridge, book clubs & years of care giving to mother, aunt & 2 cousins, Joan lived a full and fulfilling life. She will be sorely missed by all those with whom she made contact. A very heartfelt thanks to the ongoing care & support of Dr. Lin Huang & Dr. Elizabeth Layne & the entire support staff at West Oak Village. A memorial mass and celebration of life will be held at St. Andrews Catholic Church, 47 Reynolds St. Oakville at 11am Friday, January 11th.
