John Robert Gardner (Bob), age 78, son of Laura Isabel Howe and William McGregor Gardner was born in Montreal on August 19, 1936. He died August 24, 2014 at Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario. A funeral service will be held at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Mississauga, Ontario at a future date. No flowers are requested. Burial will be in Mount Royal Cemetery at his parents' grave in Montreal, Quebec.
Bob is survived by his son, Robert (Bob) Bruce Gardner and his wife Cristina (Kika) Saes and his young grandchildren, Alex and Lisa of Plantation, Florida; his sister, Elizabeth Crawford and her husband Allan of Mississauga, Ontario; his nieces and nephews Michael, David, Laurel, Marilyn, and their spouses and children; and many close friends.
He gained his education at King's School, Lower Canada College, McGill University, Boston University and the University of Georgia, graduating with a PhD in Education specializing in developmental and remedial methods for teaching reading skills to pupils and teachers.
Dr. Gardner taught students at elementary schools, high schools and was a reading consultant in Etobicoke, Ontario and in the Lexington Massachusetts's public schools; and a professor at McGill University and the University of Saskatchewan before he switched to his next career in property security, locksmithing and alarm systems in Toronto, Ontario.
Bob was an avid and accomplished athlete who participated in more than two-dozen sports including gymnastics, track & field, football, tennis, badminton and hockey, both at school and at university for which he was awarded thirty-one trophies and an athletic letter.
He was an insatiable adventurer, geographer, photographer and researcher during his travels to 30 countries around the world, including 48 U.S. States and all the provinces in Canada.
Bob's hobbies included Music, Travelling, Photography, Camping & Hiking, Swimming, Scuba Diving, Skating, Horseback Riding, Astronomy, Geology, Reading and Writing.
