John Harvey McGill

John Harvey McGill, affectionately known to many as “MacGyver,” passed away on April 6, 2025, in Hamilton, Ontario, at the age of 62. Born on January 13, 1963, in the same city he called home throughout his life, John left behind a legacy of kindness, ingenuity, and unwavering devotion to those around him.

A man of remarkable skill and resourcefulness, John owned his own business and was widely admired for his ability to fix or build just about anything. Whether it was crafting a catio for the family cats, constructing a little library for the neighbourhood, building a house for ducks, or designing an arbour for his beloved wife Cindy, John’s hands were always busy creating something meaningful. His talents earned him the nickname “MacGyver, a fitting tribute to his inventive spirit and practical brilliance.

Johns love for classic rock music filled his home with the sounds of spinning records and timeless melodies. He found joy in woodworking and had a deep appreciation for cars—both passions that reflected his meticulous nature and eye for detail. One of his greatest pleasures was fishing with his grandson Rhyder, moments that brought peace and connection across generations.

Above all else, John was a family man. He mentored his sons with patience and wisdom, guiding them not only through their careers but through life itself. He is deeply missed by Cindy, his devoted wife; his son Daniel (Lindsay); his step-son Jamie; step-daughter Tricia (Wes); grandchildren Rhiannon and Rhyder and his beloved cat, Jasper. His siblings—Richard (brother), Joy (sister), and Wendy (sister)—mourn the loss of their brother alongside many nieces and nephews who cherished him dearly.

John was predeceased by his parents, John McGill Sr. and Theresa McGill. Their memory lived on through him in the values he carried: strength, generosity, humility, and an ever-present willingness to help others at the drop of a hat.

A celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date, in Hamilton, Ontario. Venue details will be shared once confirmed.

John Harvey McGill was a strong yet gentle soul—a selfless man whose presence made life better for everyone fortunate enough to know him. May his memory bring comfort to those who loved him and inspiration to all who remember how fully he lived.
