John McGill

July 31, 1943 — April 3, 2025

Born in Montreal, John McGill passed away peacefully at the age of 81 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

He was predeceased by his teenage son, Michael McGill, and his brothers, Jeffrey and David McGill.

John will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 30 years, Peggy McGill, and her children: Myke Dwyer (Suzan Mandla), Gerry Dwyer (Johanna Dwyer), Bill Dwyer (Barbara Dwyer), and Julie Dwyer (Derek Richardson). He also leaves behind his dedicated sister, Marion Hodge, his daughter Sandra McGill and several nieces.

John retired 25 years ago from his role as a Manager at Public Works and Government Services Canada, where he worked at Place du Portage. His passion for innovation and problem-solving led him to continue consulting after retirement, offering his expertise wherever it was needed.

A lifelong lover of flight, John's fascination with aviation began as a young man and carried through to his later years as he built and flew model airplanes. He was also an avid golfer in his youth and enjoyed cross-country skiing. Known for his sharp intellect and endless curiosity, John had a keen interest in electronics and technology—particularly in the early evolution of cell phones, which fascinated him.

John will be remembered for his brilliant mind, his quiet wit, and his deep love for jazz music. His presence will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 12th, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at the Heart and Crown on Preston Street.
