It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Joyce Reay Ostrander of Mississauga, formerly of St Thomas, Ontario on April 4th, 2022 at 98 years of age. She is survived by her daughters: Susan (Tony) Gaudio of Mississauga and Nancy (John) Falzon of Brampton. Predeceased by husband Wilbert (1982) and son David (1994). Missed by grandchildren Rose (Scott) and Lisa (Christian), and Jennifer (Mark), and Charles (Emily), and Christopher, and great grandchildren Anna, RJ and Marlon, Rachel and Joyce. She will fondly be remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends from all across Canada and England.
Joyce was the only child of Roland and Suzanna Hutchinson, who were homesteaders near Livelong, Saskatchewan. At the urging of her father, as a young adult she left her log cabin behind and moved east to city life to begin her working career.
While tending her three children, Joyce studied and became one of the first female Chartered accountants in Ontario. She became the Tobacco Board Treasurer and later the Town of Aylmer Treasurer.
Church and community were important to Joyce. She was dedicated to various causes such as mental health issues, social justice and fair treatment for all, free tax clinic volunteer, genealogy and Long Term Care issues. Much of her time was dedicated to helping others. She loved driving and took her family to many places across Canada including her childhood home.
Joyce left us with some memorable lines. In times of trouble one was "this too shall pass". As a very kind and intelligent person, she would always share words of wisdom to help people when asked.
Joyce is being cremated and the family will have a celebration of her life later in the summer in Tillsonburg.
