Kay Ann Lesley Hustwit
25 October, 1962 to 23 January 2019
Kay Ann Lesley Hustwit, 56, of Guelph, Ontario. Born in Sutton, Surrey, England Kay died peacefully surrounded by friends, with her loving spouse Kevin Reid by her side, on 23 January 2019 at Guelph General Hospital due to complications from Type 1 diabetes. She was the cherished daughter of Evelyn and Peter Hustwit, dearest sister of Lynne Hustwit and beloved aunt of Dillon and Zeke. She will be missed by many friends across Canada and numerous relatives in the UK.
Kay lived a full life despite dealing with diabetes for 53 years. Her formative years in Ottawa included keeping pigeons, rabbits, mice, an early love of dogs and an obsession with horses. Her profound love of nature and art, and her inherent kindness, was evident to all who knew her. Kay was a camper and eventual councilor at Diabetes Canada's Camp Huronda where she found life-long friends, some of whom she followed to enroll at the University of Guelph. It was at UofG where Kay met her life partner Kevin in 1983. After graduation Kay spent several happy years as a research tech in the horticulture department working under Dr. Sam Lougheed, co-authoring a research paper on apple production methods. Kay's horse Mist changed her life. They spent many years together enjoying extended trail rides at The Ranch with her sister, friends Leslie, Victoria and Margaret, and her dog Gyps. Although she remained a dedicated and supportive spouse, Kay's life became increasingly more curtailed and difficult in her last decade as the complications of her diabetes gradually took hold, but she was stalwart and determined to make the best of a hard situation. Thanks to the staff at the Guelph Community Health Center - Drs. Pinksen and Renaud, Wellington LHIN, CarePartners, Paramed nurses Sally and Lisa, and the innumerable PSWs - Billy-Joe, Rachel, Rowena, Jazzdeep, Natalie, Irena, Merhet, Helen, Maria, Nathan, Jatinder, Selam, and too many others to mention, for many years of dedicated service. Also thanks to the many ER and ICU doctors and nurses at Guelph General who saved Kay's life on several occasions over recent years.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no funeral. At Kay's request, a celebration of life and trail ride will take place sometime this spring.
In memory of Kay, donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 235 Yorkland Blvd., Suite 600, Toronto, ON, M2J KY8.
