Dr. Keith Allan Richardson
July 1, 1934 to Dec.29, 2017
It is with deep sadness that we announce Keith's passing on Dec. 29, 2017. Keith fought a heroic battle with cancer for the last 5 years. He fought with dignity and determination, defying all odds. He was a devoted and attentive husband to his loving wife Cathy for 35 years and a cherished stepdad to Melissa (Jon) and Matthew (Miranda). He was a much loved grandpa, affectionately known as "Dude" to Charlotte, Ben, Macy and Jack; and a proud father of Allan (Trish), and David, and grandfather to Jessica.
He is survived by his brother Don (Judy), sister Doreen, sister-in-law Debi (Neil), brother-in-law Jim (Vikki) and mother-in-law Doreen and many nieces and nephews.
A devoted family man with a witty sense of humor and special way with words, he was very creative and always generous with his time and kindness. He was a quiet reserved man who had many talents, including cooking , painting, stained glass, and carpentry to mention a few. He could always be counted on to take an interest in others and help in any way he could. He was dearly loved and will be eternally missed.
Keith was an accomplished geologist who received a PhD in Geology from Rice University in 1963 after graduating from the University of Toronto. One of his proudest accomplishments was building (in his words) "The World's Greatest Low Background Radiation Analysis Lab" at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. While working at NASA, he was the principle investigator for Alpha-particle activity of Apollo 11 samples.
From 1971 until his retirement in 1996 he was head of the Exploration Geophysics Subdivision at the Geological Survey of Canada. One of his most memorable experiences was participating in Operation Morning Light in the Northwest Territories, where he worked to recover radioactive fragments of the crashed Russian Kosmos Satellite.
All of us, especially his wife Cathy, would like to thank the wonderful compassionate, dedicated professionals involved in his care; Dr. Charles Adamson, and RN Michelle Moser. Without their efforts and dedication, we would not have been able to keep him at home with his family where he was happiest. Heartfelt thanks to the Champlain LHIN and our case manager Jodi Gannon for coordinating these services. You are all amazing and made this journey much more bearable.
Death leaves a heartache No one can heal, Love leaves a memory No one can steal.
