Kyle Gillis MacKay

June 29, 1991 — December 25, 2022

Ottawa

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Kyle Gillis MacKay, 31, at The Ottawa Hospital on December 25th, 2022.

Kyle will be dearly missed by his son Hunter, 6, and daughter Piper, 2; mother Eileen Gillis (Bill Matson) MacKay, father Kevin (Sharon Derrah) MacKay; siblings Thomas, Oriana, Miguel, Stephanie and Mac; grandparents Patricia MacKay and Tom (Wendy) MacKay; aunts and uncles Roberta Gillis (Finlay) Sutherland, Frank Gillis, Anita (late Danny) Gillis, John (Maureen) Gillis, Kathleen (Ed) Storm, Tim (Carol Saunders) MacKay, Darrell (Crissa) MacKay, Rob (Brenda) MacKay; niece Taya and nephew Carson; cousins Colin, Devon, Tanya, Erica, Kimberly, Mikylah, Keenan, Lauren, Erin, John, Melanie, Emily, Dawson, Ashley and Raven; Hunter’s mother Janna Joncas and Piper’s mother Andreana Hebert.

Kyle was predeceased by grandparents Robert and Mary Flora Gillis, uncle Danny Gillis, and Pappa Allan Lamont.

Kyle was born on June 29th, 1991 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He touched many lives along the way, from his family roots in Nova Scotia to his school and career years in Alliston, Barrie and Ottawa.

Kyle was a kind and generous soul and he had a sense of humour that made him instantly likeable. He had the best laugh in the world and was always fun to be with.

Kyle adored his children and cherished his time with them whether it was taking Piper to the park or teaching Hunter how to fish.

Kyle truly loved the outdoors, as demonstrated by his wardrobe of camouflage. He enjoyed camping, bow hunting and canoeing, but his real passion was fishing, and he was very good at it. Kyle loved animals, especially his cats Thelma, Louise and Biddoo, and he enjoyed spending time with his dad’s dog Tarzan. Kyle really enjoyed sports and was a big Flyers fan (for some reason!); playing slow pitch with his Costco friends was a summer highlight.

Kyle’s time at Costco allowed him to understand what a work family really is. His work ethic earned him his trade as a meat cutter and he was very proud of the fact that he was the 4th generation meat cutter in his family. He loved his work and the people he worked with, and they will miss him.

Kyle was a bright light in so many peoples’ lives. He loved, and was loved, and he will be greatly missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 8, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. at Hyatt Place, 300 Moodie Drive, Ottawa.  Burial of Kyle’s ashes will be at St Andrew’s Parish Cemetery, Judique, Nova Scotia in the summer.
