Lal Hirdaramani, 80, of Toronto, ON, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2019. He was the son of Uttumchand and Parpati Hirdaramani and brother to Arjan, Keshav, Das, Duru, Janki, (all predeceased). He is survived by his wife, Yolande Hirdaramani, their two daughters, Sadhana (John) and Sheena (Rafael). He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Aidan, Sophie, Arielle, and Mateo, and his two siblings, Leela Vasandani and Pitu Hirdaramani, as well as nieces and nephews living around the world.
A generous man with an activist's soul, Lal was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka (Ceylon). In his youth, he attended St. Peter's College in Bambalapitiya (Colombo 4). Stories of his formative years always included tales of mischief, motorcycle rides, movie theatres, and table tennis matches. Lal married Yolande in 1966, and so began an enduring partnership which led to an adventure in a new country. In 1971, they immigrated to Canada and made a home in Scarborough, where they lived for their entire lives. Lal was a proud United Steelworkers member, volunteering as Branch President for almost a decade at Alcan. Throughout his life, he loved swimming, collecting electronic paraphernalia, vegetable gardening and watching movies. He enjoyed listening to the news, arguing about politics, and discussing real estate values in Toronto. With Yolande, they found joy in dancing together at social events and in going to the casino. Lal adored his grandchildren, taking pride in all their achievements and feeding them sweets at every opportunity. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
