Laure Marie Purdie (née Benzing) passed on October 17th at the age of 76 after a brave battle with cancer. Beloved wife of John Purdie. Proud and loving mother of Patrick, Nathalie and Eric; devoted grandmother of Magnus and Tor. Stepmother to Margaret and step-grandmother to Isaac and Russell. Survived by Sieglinde and Claire, her loving sisters, and son-in-law Shonn. She will be profoundly missed by family and friends.
Laure was an esteemed scientist and perfectionist with a strong and independent personality. At UAB, she synthesized a drug now widely used to treat cancer. At Agriculture Canada her frequently-cited research identified the origin and nature of the principal components of nitrogen in soil. As a senior science advisor at Health Canada, she strived for excellence in science research and management.
An enthusiast of good design, Laure devoted considerable time to style, decorating and landscaping. After retirement she maintained her passion for gardening, bird watching and tennis.
