Lois Jean Churchward

May 21, 1923 — December 11, 2016

Lois Jean Churchward (nee Henderson) 1923-2016
With sadness, the family of Lois Churchward announce the death of their pole star, an exemplar of kindness, compassion and mischievous, sometimes sly humour, on the evening of 11 December. Her husband, Gordon, died in 2004. Lois is survived by her children, Sandi Churchward-Venne (Wayne), Joanne Churchward-Little, and Dale (Cathy Clark); also by her grandchildren, Ryan (Danielle), Amanda (Jay), Tyler (Crystal), and Emmy (Adam); and her great-grandchildren: Caleb, Ben, Aiden and Ruby.
Lois was born on a farm outside of Seaforth, Ontario, and moved to Toronto during the second world war. She met her future husband in the city, and they married while Gord was back in Toronto, on leave from service. They built the home in which their family grew up in what was then north Toronto; Lois and Gord retired to Seaforth in the 90s, and Lois returned to the Toronto area (Richmond Hill) a few years ago.
She made friends easily and held onto them; though many predeceased her, a small handful would include (from the Toronto years) best-friend Betty Munro, Betty Howe, Terry Jarvis and June Turton; Ann and Amin Bhabha were good friends to Lois and Gord. Lois had many close relatives and made new friends in Seaforth, and in the last few years established additional close ties at Hesperus, in Richmond Hill.
Given her background, Lois had a foot in each of two worlds: the country girl was practical and fundamentally appreciative of the pace of rural life; the city girl was savvy, hard-working, and attuned to the hustle and flow of urban life. Lois' ever-present kindness, empathy, and beautiful refusal to judge the complex lives of others was cherished by friends and family. She was gracious: we will not see her like again.
The family would like to thank the many caregivers at Hesperus, and everyone at Hill House Hospice who brought such tender devotion to Lois in her final days.
A service will be held at the Christian Community Church, 901 Rutherford Road, in Maple Ontario, on Thursday 15 December at 11 A.M. The Church parking lot is small; additional space is available one block east in the plaza. In lieu of flowers, if anyone wishes, donations may be made to Hill House Hospice; Richmond Hill, Ontario; L4C 4A1.
