Lois Mary Gowling

October 13, 1917 — November 16, 2019

Lois Gowling (Horsfield). 13 October 1917 – 16 November 2019
Peacefully at the Glebe Centre in Ottawa on November 16, 2019 at the age of 102. Loving wife, for 55 years, of the late George Sr. (1998) and beloved mother of George Jr. (Sharon), Jim (Jan), Ron (Gemma) and Barry (Kathryn). Special ‘Gramma' to 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Predeceased by her brother George Horsfield and his wife Lois; and her sister Jean Shultz and her husband Ken. Lois was an avid golfer at the Ottawa Hunt Club and at the Palm Aire Country Club in Sarasota, Florida. Over the years she enjoyed cottage life at Norway Bay and weekends at the family chalet at Camp Fortune. She traveled the world with George and instilled that love of travel in her sons and their wives. She had a keen interest in art and architecture; was a patron of the arts, enjoying theatre and ballet. She appreciated fine antiques and had an eclectic collection of Canadian art. She had a flair for decorating and her homes in both Ottawa and Sarasota were featured in various articles. She also enjoyed bridge, gardening, fashion, sewing for the annual St. Thomas Church bazaar, gourmet cooking and entertaining. She was well read and kept abreast of current affairs, reading the newspaper from cover to cover every day. She was elegant, gracious and generous to all who knew her. Her family and friends will miss her intelligent conversation, her kindness and support. A private family celebration of her life will take place at a later date. In memory of Lois, please consider a donation to the Salvation Army.
